06/23/14 10 Year Prison Term Imposed In Newton Meth Overdose Case


A NEWTON MAN WHO CONFESSED TO SELLING THE METH THAT LED TO ANOTHER NEWTON MAN’S “OVERDOSE” DEATH, HAS BEEN SENTENCED TO 10 YEARS IN PRISON.

Lavera In Court


The San Deigo man accused of luring a 14 year old Baxter girl into his car last week is to appear in court today. 33 year old David Lavera is being held on a 50-thousand dollar bond. He's facing charges of enticing a minor, carrying weapons, and failure to have a valid driver's license. The victim, 14 year old Chasity Leon, has said she regretted getting to into Lavera's car immediately. The Baxter teen says she met Levara at Sunrise Terrace Mobile Home Park in Newton, where he was performing acrobatic stunts similar to those in the Twilight movies. He claimed to be an actor in those movies. Authorities say he arrived in the Newton area about 4 weeks ago.

Newton Man Killed In Des Moines


A 29 year old Newton man was identified yesterday as the motorcyclist who died in a motorcycle accident in Des Moines Saturday night. Des Moines police say Shawn Sabin collieded with an SUV near southeast 14th street and Park Avenue. The accident occurred around 6:15 Saturday evening. Police say Sabin's cycle flipped several times after hitting the back of the SUV. The Newton man was not wearing a helmet, and was pronounced dead at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Authorities believe the SUV turned in front of Sabin's motorcycle.

Altman named new Skiff CEO


The Skiff Medical Center Board of Trustees has named Brett Altman to the permanent position of President and CEO of Skiff Medical Center. He will step into his new role on July 18th, upon the departure of current CEO Steve Long, who has accepted a hospital leadership position in Indiana. Employed at Skiff since 1994, Altman has previously served as Chief Operating Officer, Clinical Operations Officer, interim CEO and Director of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Altman's honors include being named Sports Medicine Professional of the year, appointment to the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Nutrition, and receiving the Olive Farr Award, which is the highest honor bestowed on a member of the Iowa Physical Therapy Association.

A NEWTON 19 YEAR OLD HAS BEEN SENTENCED FOR POSSESSING SO-CALLED  PSYCHEDELIC MUSHROOMS.

"The Odd Couple" begins tonight at NCT


The Newton Community Theatre begins it's two week run tonight (Friday) of the play "The Odd Couple" at the Y Community Center on 8th avenue. The Neil Simon play begins at 7:30 tonight and Saturday evening. The play also can be seen this coming Thursday, Friday the 6th at 7:30 and a 2 pm matinee on Saturday the 7th. The Neil Simon play is about Felix Unger and Oscar Madison, two poker playing buddies. Felix is "neat nick" who has been thrown out of his house by his wife. Oscar, the slob, takes Felix in as a roommate and the laughter begins. The play ran on broadway in the 1960's, was made into a move and a long running tv show. You can buy tickets at the door or call for ticket reservations at 641-792-1230

Former Newton Doctor Sentenced


A former Newton doctor has been sentenced to five years in federal prison for carelessly prescribing controlled substances to addicted patients. Lafayette Twyner Jr. received the sentence Thursday. He was also ordered to three years of home confinement after he finished his prison sentence. The 65-year-old Twyner pleaded guilty in February to felony charges of healty care fraud and illegally distributing a prescription drug resulting in death. A plea deal dropped more than 100 other charges. Twyner's clinic was raided in 2011 after authorities investigated claims that he was prescribing large quanities of painkillers without taking basic precautions. Since then, he has surrendered his federal drug-prescribing permit and his state medical license.
