9/16/13 Several Law Enforcement Agencies Attempt To Prevent Suicide



LOCAL AUTHORITIES SPENT SEVERAL HOURS EARLY SATURDAY MORNING, AT THE

SCENE OF WHAT TURNED OUT TO BE A SUICIDE. ACCORDING TO THE JASPER COUNTY

SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT, THE MALE VICTIM DIED FROM A SELF-INFLICTED GUNSHOT

WOUND. THE INCIDENT BEGAN AT APPROXIMATELY 12:17 SATURDAY MORNING, WHEN

DEPUTIES WERE CALLED TO A HOME ON HIGHWAY F-36 WEST. OFFICERS WERE TOLD
 
MULTIPLE PEOPLE WERE AT THE RESIDENCE ATTEMPTING TO DISARM A MAN WHO

WAS THREATENING SUICIDE. A DEPUTY REPORTEDLY SAW A MAN WITH A HANDGUN

RUN INSIDE THE HOME WHEN HE ARRIVED. OFFICERS SURROUNDED THE HOME AND

SPENT NEARLY 6 HOURS TRYING TO MAKE CONTACT WITH THE INDIVIDUAL VIA CELL

PHONE AND LOUD SPEAKER. AUTHORITIES SAY THERE WAS NEVER A RESPONSE.

SHORTLY AFTER 6A.M….A TATICAL TEAM ENTERED THE RESIDENCE AND FOUND THE

MAN DEAD. HIS NAME AND ADDRESS IS NOT BEING RELEASED, PLUS IT’S STATION

POLICY NOT TO ANNOUNCE THE IDENTITY OF LOCAL SUICIDE VICTIMS. AGENCIES WHO

ASSISTED INCLUDE THE JASPER COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT, THE JASPER

COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM, THE NEWTON…BAXTER…

AND MONROE POLICE DEPARTMENTS, THE NEWTON POLICE DEPARTMENT TATICAL
 
SUPPORT TEAM, AND THE IOWA STATE PATROL AIRCRAFT UNIT.
